The Challenge: A design that translates complexity into clarity

At Bluepencil Studio, we took on the challenge of visually shaping a significant «Policy Brief» resulting from a collaboration between USAID, Counterpart, and Partners. The document was titled: «Forced Steps: The invisible continuum between gender-based violence and discrimination and the human mobility processes of women and the LGBTI population.» Our main goal was to transform the complexity of this research into a coherent and accessible visual narrative. We needed an editorial design that not only organized data and testimonies but also honored the seriousness of the topic and connected empathetically with readers, highlighting the interconnection between violence, discrimination, and forced displacement.

The Solution: Strategic thinking and visual symbolism

We created an editorial design with a color palette inspired by the LGBTIQ+ flag, softened with a touch of yellow to project warmth. To connect with the local culture, we used fonts by Latin American designers: Saira Semi-Condensedby Omnibus Type and Andada Pro by Huerta Tipográfica. The central design element is barbed wire, illustrating the barriers of the migratory journey, and bare feet made of wire, symbolizing the arduous and painful path.

The Impact: An instrument for visibility and action

The final design was a key component for the dissemination of the «Policy Brief.» The document was presented at important organizational events and made available to the public on their digital platforms. By providing a clear and accessible visual platform, Bluepencil Studio’s work contributed to the research reaching a wider audience, facilitating conversation and political advocacy on the rights of LGBTQ+ communities in the region.
